Fifty years ago, on Sunday, December 14, 1975, a railroad tank truck loaded with poisonous chlorine gas exploded outside an American chemical plant near Niagara Falls. The explosion killed four workers and injured 69 others, four of them critically. But even this disaster was only a harbinger of a much worse environmental disaster that would forever scar not only that region but the entire United States.
