Alto Says GTA May Need Second High-Speed Rail Station
Alto chief executive Martin Imbleau said a suburban stop could draw more riders while the final downtown Toronto link is built.
On Thursday, Alto CEO Martin Imbleau stated the Greater Toronto Area will probably require a secondary station, departing from the original single-stop plan.
The federal government currently mandates seven stops: Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Laval, Que., Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Que., and Quebec City, with the network hosting 72 trains daily.
Imbleau noted a suburban station would attract more regional passengers and provide line access while construction on the costlier downtown Toronto leg continues.
Grassroots coalitions of farmers and the federal Conservatives oppose the project, arguing the rail corridor would divide communities and cost taxpayers billions.
Although the GTA station plan remains under review with no final decision made, Alto continues planning the high-speed network to improve regional connectivity.
