Tornado sirens send Chiefs draft staff scrambling for shelter before making their first-round pick
Team security moved staff and reporters into shelter as the Chiefs completed first-round picks for Mansoor Delane and Peter Woods.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, Kansas City Chiefs staff sought shelter in their draft room during the NFL Draft after tornado sirens sounded near the training facility.
Senior director of team security Brian Shafar ordered everyone into the draft room after thunderstorms moved over the training facility and sirens began blaring.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed the draft room sits in the building's center, making it "one of the shelter spots." General manager Brett Veach followed all safety protocols.
The tornado siren ended about 15 minutes before the Chiefs selected LSU defensive back Mansoor Delane with the sixth overall pick and Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods with the 29th.
Both players will soon become quite familiar with the spring storms that pass through Tornado Alley, where the Chiefs' training facility operates.
