Tim Payne’s fame began as an internet joke. Now his shirt has sparked a bidding war
Bidding on the match-worn jersey has topped 21 million guarani, or about $3,270, after Tim Payne scored in his Olimpia debut.
Club Olimpia closes bidding on Tim Payne's match-worn jersey from his Aug 2 debut, with the leading offer exceeding 21 million in Paraguay's currency, equivalent to around $3,270.
Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini, known as Scarso, sparked Payne's viral rise when he encouraged his more than 2 million followers across social media to support the then-unknown New Zealand defender during the World Cup.
Before joining Olimpia on a one-year deal, the 32-year-old spent seven years with Wellington Phoenix in the Australian A-League and two years with England's Blackburn Rovers, where work-permit issues limited his appearances.
During his Aug 2 debut in Asuncion, Payne scored minutes after entering as a substitute, helping Olimpia defeat Rubio 5-0 and cementing his connection with local fans.
Payne launched the auction to give the jersey to a 'true Olimpista,' stating in a video he understands what the shirt means to supporters who bid thousands of dollars for the memorabilia.
