Nepal Starts Tiger Census to Track Recovery

Over 2,300 camera traps and 250 staff are deployed to estimate tiger numbers and monitor habitat in four protected parks, continuing gains after population tripled since 2010.

  • On December 16, 2025, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation launched a nationwide tiger census deploying around 1,100 advanced camera traps across four national parks.
  • Under the Tiger Conservation Action Plan, the census follows the 2013, 2018 and 2022 censuses to track Nepal's tiger population recovery and inform the 2026 tiger population assessment.
  • Field teams will install and manage more than 2,300 motion-sensitive camera traps, using capture and recapture methodology to identify tigers by unique stripe patterns, supported by over 250 conservation staff and 25 technical personnel, with each unit costing around 35,000 Nepalese rupees.
  • DNPWC Director General Buddi Sagar Paudel said `The census will provide reliable data on the current tiger population and help guide future conservation efforts`, and the programme budgeted around 30 million Nepalese rupees for manpower, memory cards, tents and sleeping bags.
  • Globally, tiger numbers have risen to 5,357 as of 2025, situating Nepal's efforts amid rising so-called problematic tigers and government spending on their management.
