Three spontaneous fires in Cherryville in the last week put out by residents
Twenty-four residents completed wildfire safety training days before neighbours and the Cherryville Fire Watch Society put out the third fire in a week.
On Tuesday, May 5, Cherryville residents successfully extinguished a wildfire that sparked just off Sugar Lake Road, preventing further spread in the rural community.
Rider Ventures Ltd. hosted 24 residents for the ninth annual S100 wildfire training on Saturday, May 2, covering prescribed burning, trench digging, and hose deployment.
According to the Regional District of North Okanagan , this was the third spontaneous fire in one week, following a house fire and barn fire earlier.
Area Director Jim Johnson praised Cherryville's "dedication to protecting the North Okanagan against wildfires," calling the success a result of years of volunteer hard work.
Since 2018, the community has developed a 2,000-square-foot Fire Watch Building, initiated by the Cherry Ridge Management Committee and operated by the Fire Watch Society.
