Ebola kills 3 Red Cross workers in the Congo, organization says
The IFRC said the volunteers were among the first known victims as the outbreak reached 82 confirmed cases in Congo, the WHO said.
On Saturday, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies announced that three volunteers died in the Democratic Republic of Congo after contracting Ebola while on duty in March.
Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo, and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane contracted the virus on March 27 during dead body management activities, while the community remained unaware the outbreak had begun.
Based at the Mongbwalu branch in Ituri province, the three died on May 5, 15, and 16 respectively, reflecting the high-risk environments where Red Cross volunteers serve vulnerable populations.
On Friday, the World Health Organization upgraded Congo's risk assessment to 'very high,' citing 82 confirmed cases and seven deaths alongside nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths.
The Bundibugyo strain carries no approved vaccine or treatment, heightening concern for healthcare workers; Dr. Craig Spencer, an emergency room physician, warned that "close contact with people when they're most contagious" poses the greatest risk.
