Three men jailed for life after man, 60, shot dead through living room window in County Durham

The attack was premeditated and linked to a £380 drug debt; three men received life sentences with minimum terms between 26 and 32 years, the judge said.

  • Three men were jailed for life following the April 5 fatal shooting of Barry Dawson, 60, at his home at 22 Elm Street, South Moor, after a trial at Teesside Crown Court.
  • After an earlier altercation involving a green Cherokee Jeep, the court heard Reay and his group returned with masks and a loaded gun, showing premeditation.
  • Kelvin Lawson smashed the living-room window with a brick so Sean Reay could fire through it, and the single shot struck Mr Dawson in the chest, puncturing his heart, lung and liver.
  • Mr Justice Cotter sentenced Sean Reay to life with a minimum term of 32 years, Kelvin Lawson to 28 years, Thomas Sterling to 26 years, and jailed Kevin Dorward, Keith Dorward, and Michaela Hetherington for perverting the course of justice.
  • Durham Constabulary and Detective Chief Inspector Neil Fuller said police used CCTV and phone data; community of South Moor faces ongoing grief, as Sarah Hopwood described Mr Dawson as an 'adored father and grandfather.
