Mistral Bags €3B to Build Europe's Sovereign AI Champion
The French startup said the new capital will help build and own data centers as it targets 200 megawatts of European capacity by 2027.
- On Tuesday, Paris-based Mistral AI announced it raised $3.5 billion in a Series D funding round led by Samsung Electronics, pushing its post-money valuation to more than 21 billion. The investment marks the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company.
- The round includes new investors Advent, BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg alongside existing backers like Nvidia and Salesforce. This funding nearly doubles the company's valuation from 11.7 billion recorded one year ago.
- Mistral previously completed an $830 million debt raise earlier this year to fund a data center in Bruyeres-le-Chatel equipped with 13,800 Nvidia GB300 GPUs. A second facility costing 1.2 billion is under development in Sweden.
- CEO Arthur Mensch plans to use the capital to build and own data centers while renting additional computing capacity, aiming to surpass $1 billion in annual recurring revenue before year's end. Mistral's models are integrated into Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio.
- Mensch aims to grow owned compute capacity around 100% over five years to support training "bigger and faster models." Mistral markets itself as an independent, European-rooted option, pitching "sovereign AI" to keep data and infrastructure decisions within customer control.
