Thousands join push to lift HMRC Personal Allowance to £18,000 as tax freeze goes on
The campaign says the frozen £12,570 threshold is pulling more workers into Income Tax, and ministers say raising it to £18,000 would cost over £40 billion a year.
Created by Mike Haynes, the petition seeking to raise the Personal Allowance has reached 49,123 signatures, putting it just hundreds away from the 100,000-signature milestone.
Frozen at £12,570 until 2031, the Personal Allowance policy increases tax revenues by pulling more workers into paying Income Tax through fiscal drag without changing headline rates.
Campaigners warn that workers on minimum wage may soon pay Income Tax as earnings rise, stating, "We want to keep some more of our own money."
The Government rejected the proposal to increase the Personal Allowance to £18,000, citing a significant fiscal cost of over £40 billion per year.
If it reaches 100,000 signatures, the petition will be considered for a debate in Parliament, though there is no guarantee MPs will schedule one before it closes on 30 September 2026.
