US Navy Flattop Is Heading To The Middle East As Supercarrier Sidelined
USS Santa Barbara and USS Tulsa make a scheduled logistics stop in Singapore under a bilateral agreement to support mine countermeasures operations in the region.
Summary
Two of the United States Navy’s 11 nuclear-powered supercarriers have been operating in the Middle East since last month, but on Tuesday, it was reported that USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) was heading to Naval Support Activity Souda Bay on Crete. CVN-78 will spend at least a week undergoing pier-side repairs following a fire in its laundry room. That fire was far worse than initially reported, requiring several hours to bring under control, and with smoke damage extending to the berthing areas. Even as the U.S. Navy will be down a supercarrier in the region to support Operation Epic Fury, a third flattop was already en route.
