Chapman’s Ice Cream Reducing Reliance on U.S. Ingredients
The family-owned company is sourcing more ingredients from Canada and other countries while freezing prices until March 2028, CEO Ashley Chapman said.
- Markdale, Ontario-based Chapman's Ice Cream Ltd. announced Wednesday that it will replace more than 70 percent of American ingredients with Canadian or non-U.S. alternatives by mid-2027, CEO Ashley Chapman said.
- President Donald Trump's initial tariffs in March 2025 prompted Chapman to explore new suppliers and avoid "future headaches" caused by the escalating Canada-U.S. trade dispute.
- The company signed a five-year deal with Original Foods near Hamilton for sugar cones and is sourcing almonds from Australia and cherries from Chile, while pledging no price increases until March 2028.
- While Chapman noted producing entirely Canadian ice cream is "impossible" due to missing local cocoa and sugar cane, the firm supports the government's rejection of unjustified tariffs to protect economic sovereignty and Quebec.
- Chapman said the Trump administration's interference changed his view on long-term deals, noting other companies are suddenly reconsidering domestic production to manage supply chain risks in the trade dispute.
