Plastic pollution, which has been observed for years along the coasts of Adana and Mersin, has expanded this year to Kemer, Fethiye, and Alanya. According to the study, the microplastic concentration measured at all four stations in Alanya reached 2 to 65 times the highest values previously reported on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.
Plastic pollution along Turkey's coasts is now a persistent environmental problem threatening not only marine ecosystems but also the food chain. Microplastic levels off Alanya reach 65 times previous high on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast - Turkish Minute
A preliminary scientific assessment released by the municipality of southern Antalya province's Alanya district in Turkey has found microplastic pollution along the district's coast at levels up to 65 times the highest value previously reported in studies of Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Diving expeditions conducted by diver Hüseyin Fırat in Antalya revealed that microplastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea is at least three times more concentrated underwater than on the surface. The pollution is believed to originate from recycling facilities in Adana and Mersin, and it was emphasized that marine life consumes these plastics, which then reach humans.
