Sultan of Brunei Revokes Daughter-in-Law's Title
The decree follows conduct officials said was unbecoming and tarnished the monarchy’s name, while the couple’s four children keep their titles.
On August 7, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah issued a decree stripping daughter-in-law Pengiran Raabi'atul Adawiyyah of all royal titles, announced by Acting Grand Chamberlain Pengiran Haji Raffizanna bin Pengiran Haji Razali via state media.
Palace officials stated the revocation followed conduct "deemed unbecoming of a spouse of a member of the royal family," with her actions having "tarnished the monarchy's good name" toward the Sultan.
Raabi'atul, 33, married Prince Abdul Malik, the Sultan's second son, in a 10-day wedding festival in 2015, distinguishing this from prior title revocations by the Sultan linked to divorce.
Neither the Prince nor his wife has announced plans for divorce, and their four children will retain their royal titles and succession positions in Bandar Seri Begawan.
This decree marks a unique departure for the House of Bolkiah as it targets a spouse within an ongoing marriage, though the specific behavior prompting the Sultan's decision remains undisclosed.
