The Russian Air Incursions Are a Warning to Europe
The Europeans must come back to earth when it comes to “reassurance forces” in Ukraine. The post The Russian Air Incursions Are a Warning to Europe appeared first on Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.
Since the beginning of September 2025, a number of Russian incursions into European airspace, notably in Poland, Romania, Estonia, Denmark and Norway, have left a security threat on the continent. If the origins of some of them are not yet proven, these short-term violations are nonetheless challenging: Moscow could be testing the limits of European decision-making, action and defence capabilities more broadly.
Russia denies, in spite of the obvious, being responsible for irregular incursions into the skies of Poland and the Baltic countries. These violations would be aimed at worrying European public opinion by portraying both NATO's impotence and Russia's recklessness.
