Australians on Hijack Plane Named After Terrifying Plunge

Passengers and crew restrained the alleged attacker after the captain was stabbed and the jet plunged 14,000 feet in 30 seconds, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv plunged 14,000ft after the Omani second officer allegedly stabbed Indian captain Smit Machchhar during a suspected act of terrorism.
  • During the descent, the co-pilot attacked the captain with an emergency axe, damaging the rudder and prompting passengers to intervene to stop what they feared was a suicide mission.
  • Passenger Yaniv Hayoun and others worked for 20 minutes to subdue the officer; Hayoun later told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he used knowledge from the series Mayday to help stabilize the plane.
  • After Machchhar unlocked the cockpit door, a British pilot assisted in securing the flight, and the Omani officer is now under arrest for the alleged hijacking attempt.
  • Among the passengers were Sydney residents Steven and Carol Moss; Steven's father, Sam Moss, was an Auschwitz survivor who co-founded the Katies fashion chain before selling it to the Coles Myer group in 1984.
