Timberwolves Coach: 'At Least Four' of Victor Wembanyama's 12 Blocks Were Goaltending
Several of Wembanyama’s 12 blocks were disputed on replay, and Chris Finch said the Timberwolves had points they wanted back.
On Monday, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the San Antonio Spurs 104-102 in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals. Victor Wembanyama set an NBA playoff record with 12 blocks, but Timberwolves officials questioned whether several were uncalled goaltending violations.
Minnesota head coach Chris Finch told reporters Tuesday that at least four blocks were goaltending violations. Finch said the lack of calls was 'alarming,' estimating the missed officiating cost his team eight points.
Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert agreed, stating 'If you look at them, there are probably three or four.' Teammate Terrence Shannon Jr. added defiantly: 'He gonna need to block it every time.'
With Game 2 scheduled for Wednesday in San Antonio, the Timberwolves are preparing tactical adjustments. Finch urged players to play a 'smarter brand of offensive basketball' to navigate the rim against Wembanyama.
Analysts note that pointing out officiating concerns early in a series is a calculated Finch playoff tactic. Wembanyama, known as 'the Alien,' has led the league in blocks for three consecutive seasons.
