The navy is getting new submarines. What will Canada use them for?
The government is weighing two designs with air independent propulsion as it seeks stealthier subs for Arctic patrols and long-range missions.
Vice-Admiral Dan Charlebois, commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, described submarines as the 'ultimate deterrent' and said Canada is reentering the submarine field quickly.
The federal government plans to soon select a preferred bidder to build a modern submarine fleet to replace the Victoria class, retiring by the mid-2030s.
The Liberal government plans for up to 12 stealthy, lethal submarines capable of Arctic deployment.
The submarine contract decision is expected by the end of the month, 'plus or minus a couple of days.
