'He Is so Special to Me': Taika Waititi to Voice Willy Wonka in New Netflix Animated Film
Taika Waititi and Kit Connor voice the leads as Netflix’s animated retelling adds original songs and a new story inspired by Roald Dahl.
Netflix announced a 2027 animated film adaptation of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, starring Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka and Kit Connor as Charlie Paley, directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan.
Set in modern-day London, the story follows Wonka after serving prison time for turning a child into a blueberry, while Paley and his friends plot to steal a Wonka Bar to prevent their eviction.
Sony Pictures Imageworks, the studio behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters, is animating the project, expanding the Roald Dahl Story Company IP for Netflix.
Waititi called the opportunity to voice the 'iconic, eccentric candy genius' hugely exciting, while Connor, known for Heartstopper, praised the directors' "vision for the film" capturing the original's spirit.
More than 60 years after Dahl's novel debuted, this marks the fourth big-screen adaptation, following the 1971 film, the 2005 version, and Wonka in 2023.
