At the end of May, the government boasted of the record-breaking pace of signing arms purchase contracts worth over PLN 120 billion, concluded in just three days. However, these SAFE contracts did not include funding for infrastructure, without which new equipment would be unaffordable.
Poland may run out of funds for infrastructure for weapons purchased under the SAFE program. As "Rzeczpospolita" has learned, adequate funds have not been secured, for example, for storage facilities for combat vehicles, drones, and ammunition. This could have disastrous consequences for the purchased equipment.
The government has repeatedly boasted about securing funding from the EU's SAFE loan program. However, the state budget lacks funds to build the necessary infrastructure for the purchased military equipment.
Although we have contracted over 100 billion PLN worth of weapons from SAFE loans, which are to be delivered by 2030, as "Rz" has learned, the Ministry of Defense has not secured the funds for the necessary infrastructure to support them. This amounts to billions of zlotys.
