The minimum temperature your heating should be set at to avoid condensation & mould
Experts say keeping rooms warm and ventilated can cut indoor humidity and help stop moisture collecting on cold surfaces.
Stephen Hankinson, energy efficiency expert at Electric Radiators Direct, explains that ideal indoor humidity should be about 50%, as high levels cause condensation to collect as droplets on cool surfaces.
Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at Uswitch, recommends keeping homes heated between 18 and 21 degrees celsius to prevent mold, as warmth maintains water in vapor form rather than allowing it to cool into condensation.
Opening your windows for just five minutes daily helps excess moisture escape, especially when cooking or drying clothes indoors; experts recommend using extractor fans and placing damp laundry near open windows to further reduce humidity.
Look at improving your home's insulation if heating and ventilating alone do not resolve damp issues, as insulation seals homes from outside and eliminates cold surfaces where condensation forms, keeping properties warmer and dryer.
Install a radiant heating system if standard measures fail to remedy humidity issues, as infrared panels provide 100% of their warmth through radiant heat, maintaining humidity stability without relying on air circulation.
