The world map we've seen in schools, atlases and digital platforms for generations could change, as the United Nations is supporting the use of map representations that more accurately show the true size of continents in relation to each other.
On September 4, 2026, the United Nations voted for a resolution to make wider use of the new Equal Earth map, which more accurately reflects the size of parts of the world. In particular, we are talking about clarifying the proportions of Africa in relation to a number of countries and geographical areas of the northern hemisphere, among them the “hypertrophied” size of Russia.
