Summer Movie Preview: Jon Favreau Wants to Inspire a New Generation to Fall in Love with Star Wars
Jon Favreau says the film will show a new side of Grogu as Pedro Pascal returns and the New Republic faces Imperial warlords.
Director Jon Favreau brings The Mandalorian and Grogu to theaters on May 22, with Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin. Hired by the New Republic, Djarin and apprentice Grogu must protect the galaxy from Galactic Empire warlords.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down after 13 years earlier this year, marking a major transition for the franchise. Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now lead the studio into a new era.
"It's not no longer about the Mandalorian rescuing Grogu," Favreau said; Grogu now studies under Luke Skywalker and unleashes his abilities. The production team upgraded the cinematic experience to meet theatrical standards.
Sigourney Weaver joins as Colonel Ward and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, expanding the ensemble. Favreau said the team aims to "introduce these characters to a new audience" while evolving the relationship for longtime fans.
At 59, Favreau sees this as a culmination of his seven-year journey with the franchise. Pedro Pascal became tearful at a recent event, expressing his lifelong dream of seeing these characters on the big screen.
