VW's New Camper Van Series Will Be Unlike Anything It's Made Before
Volkswagen and Stuff Bubble developed lightweight inflatable modules that turn the ID. Buzz into a camper for four people in minutes.
- At Caravan Salon 2026 later this month, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Stuff Bubble will unveil the California Cruise and California Beach concepts, marking the first fully electric addition to the California family.
- Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Stefan Mecha said the partnership aims to "rethink the campervan" by developing inflatable modules that transform everyday vans into campers in minutes without permanent fixtures.
- Weighing less than 23 lbs, the inflatable kitchen offers "full kitchen functionality" for the California Beach, while the inflatable bed weighs 12 lbs as a single or 26 lbs as a double, accommodating four people.
- The California Cruise will offer 79- or 86-kWh battery pack options providing WLTP ranges of around 250-300 miles, with Volkswagen stating the vehicle "marks an important milestone towards an entirely new generation of all-electric campervans" through 2028.
- Although US availability remains unconfirmed, Volkswagen recently launched the 2027 Buzz Tourer with a fold-out mattress and Overnight Mode, signaling potential for stateside release. Full details arrive during Caravan Salon, running August 28 to September 6.
