More than 70 percent of the Romanian railway network is outdated and in need of immediate renovation, which is why the caretaker government in Bucharest adopted the railway development strategy for the period between 2026 and 2030. The decision was also an essential condition for the continued operation of the Romanian State Railways (CFR).
The adoption of this strategy also allows the signing of the CFR's activity and performance contract for the period 2026-2030, a document necessary including for the payment of salaries.
The Government approved, at its extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, 19 August, the Railway Infrastructure Development Strategy for the period 2026-2030, a document setting out investment and reform directions in the railway sector for the next five years.
