UN, aid groups warn Gaza operations at risk from Israel impediments
- On Dec 17, the United Nations and more than 200 local and international aid groups warned that humanitarian operations in Gaza risk collapse as dozens face de-registration by December 31, forcing closures within 60 days.
- Aid groups say the re-registration process, described as `vague, arbitrary, and highly politicised`, has stalled, leaving millions of dollars of supplies stranded outside Gaza.
- INGOs run or support the majority of field hospitals, primary healthcare centres, water and sanitation services, and nutrition stabilisation centres, and one in three health facilities would close almost immediately, cutting off care for tens of thousands of patients.
- The UN said it cannot replace INGOs if they are de-registered, and closures would be immediate after December 31, with aid groups warning dismantling now appears imminent.
- As winter deepens, officials warn restrictions could destabilise the fragile ceasefire as Hamas says fewer aid trucks enter Gaza while Israel denies wrongdoing and aid agencies report insufficient aid.
