Brussels Discards for Now a European Tax on the Extra Benefits of Energy

The European Commission has rejected this Friday for the time being a proposal to tax at European level the extraordinary benefits of energy companies and has forwarded this decision to the Member States, after Spain, together with five other countries, has called for progress towards a common solution to share the cost of the energy crisis caused by the war in the Middle East.

Whether the EU will once again resort to a common model for taxing windfall profits should become clearer after the European Commission considers the requests of countries seeking such a measure.

Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Austria pushed for a European-wide tax on windfall profits in the energy sector, a position that Poland has subsequently joined. Berlin is calling for part of these revenues to be used to alleviate the impact of rising fuel prices on households and businesses, while Brussels is ruling out introducing a community tax for now and is keeping the option of national levies open.

Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Austria launched a petition to tax at European level the extraordinary benefits of the energy sector, a position to which Poland has subsequently joined. Berlin claims to use part of that revenue to alleviate the impact of the fuel escalation on households and businesses, while Brussels currently dismisses a Community levy and keeps the national levy track open.
