The People's Bank of China (PBOC) was one of the first central banks in the world to launch a digital currency, which was first introduced in September 2020. Other central banks, notably the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, have also discussed launching digital dollars and digital euros, respectively, but none have actually been issued.
