The 20p coin sold for almost 240 times face value on eBay - how to spot
The Royal Mint said fewer than 250,000 were made after a 2008 minting error, and the coin remains legal tender at 20p.
A rare undated 20p coin featuring Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Shield recently sold on eBay for £48.16, plus £2.70 postage, as a "Genuine 2008 undated 20p mule error coin."
The Royal Mint accidentally released these 'mule' coins during a design transition in 2008 because the previous Heads side was paired with the new Tails design, leaving no date stamped.
This minting problem affected less than 250,000 coins of the 136 million 20p pieces produced in 2008; these remain legal tender with a face value of 20p, according to the Royal Mint.
The error occurred when the Royal Mint replaced William Gardner's Tudor rose reverse with the current Royal Shield design, which appears on all coins up to the value of 50p.
Collectors remain keen to check their change for these rare items, as the undated 20p coin highlights the importance of examining spare change for hidden treasures worth far more than face value.
