The 1 common household bin mistake causing litter to be left on the streets
Ashley says households can prevent street litter by tying bin bags and closing lids, as loose waste and foxes spread rubbish after collection.
Ashley, known as The No1 Binman on TikTok, explained that residents—not binmen—are responsible for street litter, addressing social media comments questioning why binmen "put more rubbish on the street than in the lorry."
Overfilled bins with loose rubbish on top create litter that scatters across streets, Ashley explained; England's windy weather frequently blows debris down the pavement.
Misusing general waste bins for food disposal exacerbates the problem, as foxes rip open bags and scatter debris. "Then foxes get hold of it and rip everything apart," Ashley said.
While binmen attempt to pick up items they drop, they are not responsible for pre-existing litter. "If we've dropped something, we'll pick it up," Ashley stated, but workers cannot clear debris found before arrival.
To prevent scattered waste, Ashley advises households to tie bags securely and ensure bin lids remain fully closed. Keeping properties clear of rubbish helps prevent overflowing bins.
