Thailand Confirms Three Deaths From Vessel Attacked in Strait of Hormuz
Thailand said 20 crew members were rescued and 3 others died after the Mayuree Naree was struck in the Strait of Hormuz.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed on Wednesday that three Thai crew members from The Thai-flagged Mayuree Naree died after the vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz last month.
US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February prompted Tehran to close the Strait of Hormuz; Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they struck the Mayuree Naree because the ship ignored "warnings."
The Mayuree Naree was struck on Mar 11 while transiting the Gulf; the vessel's owner reported last week that human remains were found in the "affected area" after Twenty Thai crew members returned home.
Overnight Tuesday, the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire; Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said passage "will be possible via coordination with Iran's Armed Forces."
Sihasak plans to travel to Oman in mid-April to seek assistance coordinating with Iran to secure safe passage for nine Thai ships stranded in the Strait.
"Sihasak" is making preparations to request permission for Thai ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz during his visit to Oman, seeking avenues for negotiations with Iran. He is unaware of the issue of Thai oil tankers stopping in Singapore and emphasizes that Thai ships must be returned to Thailand.
