Thailand conference launches international initiative to fight online scams

The Global Partnership Against Online Scams aims to reduce losses estimated between $18 billion and $37 billion annually through law enforcement and private sector cooperation.

  • Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime hosted a two-day Bangkok conference that culminated on Thursday with the launch of the Global Partnership Against Online Scams.
  • Scam centers have proliferated across Southeast Asia, and scam victims lost between $18 billion and $37 billion in 2023, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.
  • More than 300 participants from nearly 60 countries attended, Meta presented a threat report on AI scams, and TikTok signed the closing statement as an early private-sector partner this month.
  • The partnership agreement signed by Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru and the United Arab Emirates commits to political action, law enforcement cooperation, victim protection, public awareness and cross-border collaboration as a collective anti-scam effort.
  • The move builds on prior Association of Southeast Asian Nations pledges, while more than 70 countries signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime in October, and Cambodia was absent amid conflict with Thailand.
