Texas City Council Candidate Who Protested ICE Shooting Faces 'Riot Participation' Charge
Ramos denies wrongdoing and will contest the misdemeanor after his arrest tied to protests over an ICE shooting, his campaign said.
- On Saturday, Austin City Council candidate Misael Ramos was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of riot participation. Travis County Sheriff deputies booked the Democratic Socialists of America member into custody around 9:30 a.m.
- The arrest followed protests over the September 20 shooting of Venezuelan asylum seeker Wilber Rafael Garces Perez by ICE officers. An unmarked truck sideswiped his vehicle twice before he was shot in the back.
- Authorities accused Ramos of "engaging in a riot on the 20th of September," yet his attorney, Edmund Skip Davis, disputed the charge. "I didn't see any riots," Davis said, "I saw people out there chanting and protesting."
- Ramos denies wrongdoing and will contest the charge, his campaign said. Campaign manager Jeffrey Clemmons stated Ramos joined the scene to offer "condemnation of the incident" and show solidarity with hundreds of Austinites.
- ICE and DHS have not explained the shooting, stating only that Garces Perez was the subject of a targeted vehicle stop. The encounter has sparked ongoing protests, including a gathering outside the Texas Capitol on Monday night.
