DeMeco Ryans Makes Key Change After Texans’ 0-4 Start
Ryans said the Texans have allowed 343.8 yards and 27.3 points per game as he shifts defensive control from Matt Burke.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans announced he is taking over defensive play-calling duties from defensive coordinator Matt Burke amid the team's 0-4 start.
Following Sunday's 34-30 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Pro Bowl cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. identified communication breakdowns as a primary issue after quarterback Dak Prescott racked up 335 passing yards.
The defense currently ranks 26th in points allowed, yielding 27.3 per game, while the secondary ranks 28th in the NFL, giving up 260 yards passing per contest.
Ryans insisted the decision is "no slight" against Burke, who he said has done an "outstanding job," emphasizing the move aims to "help spark things" rather than overhaul the defense.
Facing the also-winless Tennessee Titans in Week 5, the Texans hope to reverse their season as recent reports have placed Ryans on a coaching "hot seat" list amid continued struggles.
