Tether Downplays Impact of US Seizure at Banking Partner EQIBank
Tether said its EQIBank holdings are under 0.034% of group assets as the bank fights U.S. forfeiture claims over about $84.2 million.
On Thursday, stablecoin issuer Tether confirmed it holds assets at Dominica-licensed EQIBank, representing less than 0.034% of its group assets, as the offshore bank contests a major U.S. government seizure.
After failing to secure banking with Singapore's Development Bank, Tether connected to EQIBank, which routed its money through payment processor Capstone; prosecutors allege Capstone misrepresented itself to Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase.
U.S. prosecutors are seeking to forfeit roughly $84.2 million from Capstone accounts at Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase, while EQIBank claims the seizure totaled roughly $89 million, about 80% of its monetary holdings.
A Tether spokesperson stated the company had "no knowledge of the conduct by Capstone alleged by the Department of Justice," while the disclosure does not suggest an immediate threat to USDT reserves or its dollar peg.
EQIBank's June federal challenge to recover funds failed when District Judge Dale A. Drozd denied the motion for lack of equitable jurisdiction, though the case was reassigned to related judges on September 16, with claimants having 60 days to file.
