Dangerous door handles? Tesla is recalling almost 3m cars in China
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced in February that it will outlaw minimalist, pop-out door handles from January 1 2027 as safety concerns mount about the feature.
Lowerable door handles are considered chic and modern, but after fatal accidents they are targeted by the guards. While Tesla in China, in particular, is already facing large calls back, KBA is still struggling for strict requirements in Europe.
Flush handles have long given electric cars a futuristic look. They also pose a much less glamorous problem: in the event of an accident or electrical failure, they can become difficult to find or operate. In China, nine manufacturers will recall around 4.3 million vehicles, including nearly 3 million Tesla.
