Tesla Rolls Out an Emergency Drive-Away Feature After Supercharger Shooting
The update lets drivers leave while still plugged in, but Tesla says it is for emergencies only and could damage vehicles and chargers.
- On Thursday, Tesla rolled out an "Emergency Drive Away" software update allowing vehicles to shift into Drive while plugged into a Supercharger, though the feature is currently available only for US vehicles.
- The update follows a shooting two months ago at a Twin Falls, Idaho, Supercharger station near an In-N-Out, where a gunman fired on three people in Teslas, including victim Dale Schultz.
- Tesla warns the feature is for emergencies only, noting that deliberate misuse brings "additional penalties" and that using it will damage both the vehicle and the Supercharger.
- Prior to this update, owners sought native escape solutions, with many purchasing the $299 EVject breakaway adapter that Tesla sued in 2024 over high-temperature claims.
- Although stations in Canada use the same connector, Tesla restricted the feature to the US. Critics argue the real solution requires gun control and mental health investment, not software updates.
