- On Sunday, Fotyen Tesfay of Ethiopia won the Zurich Barcelona Marathon in Spain, recording the second-fastest women's time and the fastest debut at the distance.
- Targeting the 2:09:56 world record, Tesfay arrived with a 1:03:04 half-marathon and recent championship credentials.
- During the race, she passed 30K in 1:32 and 40K in 2:03:31 as windy conditions started to take their toll on the group, working with two male pacemakers, covering 10K in 31:05 and the halfway split in 1:05:05.
- After the finish, Tesfay said 'Today was fantastic-- not what I was expecting, but it is good' and acknowledged wind hindered her late push, winning by nearly eight minutes.
- The result places Tesfay in the all-time lists as the first since Ruth Chepngetich, who is serving a three-year ban after testing positive for hydrochlorothiazide and had results annulled, leaving her record contested.
