Teenagers to be offered new vocational GCSEs

New qualifications will sit alongside traditional GCSEs and employers will be asked to provide 200,000 more work experience placements for 14- to 16-year-olds.

  • The Government announced new Vocational GCSEs for 14-year-olds in England, available from September 2029, to achieve parity with traditional GCSEs. These qualifications will eventually replace existing Technical Awards.
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham launched these reforms to address youth unemployment, arguing the current "one-size-fits-all" approach fails students. The move targets more than one million young people classified as Neet.
  • Subject options for the new Vocational GCSEs may include Business Management, Creative Media Production, and Digital Tech, while Ofqual will regulate assessment to ensure parity with traditional GCSEs. A national mission seeks 200,000 additional work experience placements for pupils.
  • Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott criticized the plan as "ripping up the system," while Association of School and College Leaders general secretary Pepe Di'Iasio called the proposals "well intentioned" but warned of staffing shortages.
  • The Department for Education will launch a consultation later this year to shape the qualifications. National Education Union representative Daniel Kebede said "sustained investment and resources" were needed to ensure success.
