Team UK Wins Gold Medals at International Skills Competition
Team UK’s best result since 2017 included medals in 19 of 25 categories, WorldSkills UK said.
- The WorldSkills Finals in Shanghai concluded on the 27th, where Team UK secured gold, silver, and three bronze medals, winning awards in 19 of the 25 skills categories contested.
- This performance marks the strongest result for Team UK since the event in Abu Dhabi, with Ben Blackledge, CEO of WorldSkills UKTeam, noting competitors dedicated three years to training.
- Gold medals went to Ruth Douglas from Northern Ireland and Samuel Jones from Ashton, while Elyot Harmston from Biggleswade earned silver; Jones, who works for Industrial Cooling Equipment Ltd, described the event as the "Olympics."
- Minister Baroness Jacqui Smith, who visited China, stated, "I couldn't be prouder of Team UK," while Freya Thomas Monk, managing director of Vocational Qualifications and Training at Pearson, praised the competitors' talent and determination.
- WorldSkills UKTeam is now collaborating with the Government and the Milburn Commission to integrate skills programs into classrooms, helping young people gain employment and reducing the number designated as NEETs.
