TD Bank to Buy Back up to $10 Billion of Its Shares
The program would cover up to 61 million shares, or 3.74% of TD’s outstanding common shares, after the lender completed a $7 billion repurchase.
TD Bank Group announced plans to repurchase up to $10 billion of its common shares by next year, pending approval from the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada, following a $7 billion buyback completed on Sept 25.
OSFI's June decision to reduce the domestic stability buffer lowered the required common equity tier 1 ratio for major banks to 11 per cent from 11.5 per cent, freeing capital for shareholder returns.
Standing at approximately 14.3 per cent as of July 31, the Bank Group's CET1 ratio exceeds the 13 per cent level maintained by Canada's biggest banks in recent years, providing significant surplus capital.
Under the proposed program, the Bank Group will repurchase up to 61 million common shares, representing about 3.74 per cent of issued and outstanding shares as of Aug 31, with all purchased shares to be cancelled.
Chief Executive Raymond Chun said in Aug the lender could return more than $13 billion in fiscal 2027, though analysts warn weak loan demand and an uncertain economy may complicate effective capital deployment.
