Taiwan begins 5-day military drill with tanks patrolling streets
The exercise uses actual troops and terrain to improve rapid deployment and joint operations as Taiwan prepares for a possible Chinese attack.
On Sunday, Taiwan's defense ministry announced a five-day 'Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise' starting Monday, aimed at modernizing military operations through realistic wartime simulations.
China sent 21 aircraft near Taiwan on Sunday, with 19 entering the airspace to Taiwan's southwest and into the Western Pacific to conduct 'long-distance training over open seas.'
The exercise uses actual troops, terrain, and equipment to strengthen rapid peacetime-to-wartime transitions and improve logistical sustainment and joint command mechanisms, the ministry said.
Taiwan regularly holds military drills, including firing its new HIMARS rocket system into the Taiwan Strait earlier this month, underscoring the shift toward realistic combat simulations.
The defense ministry confirmed the main annual Han Kuang war games are expected in August, which will further test joint command strategies refined during this week's training.
The Taiwanese army began on Monday five days of "ready - to - fight " maneuvers to "consolidate the ability to react " and to "verify the effectiveness of the joint operations of the troops " in the face of China's growing military pressure.
