Taiwan monitoring 'abnormal' China military leadership changes after top general put under investigation

Taiwan uses intelligence and surveillance to assess Beijing's intentions amid China's military purge, which has removed over 17 top generals since 2012, defense officials said.

  • On Jan 26, Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo said Taipei is monitoring what it called abnormal changes in China's military leadership after General Zhang Youxia was investigated.
  • China announced on Jan 24 that General Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, and General Liu Zhenli, are under investigation for suspected violations.
  • Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo said Taiwan will use joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets and intelligence-sharing to 'grasp' China's possible intentions, aiming for a comprehensive assessment of all indicators.
  • Speaking to lawmakers and reporters, Koo emphasized sustained war preparedness, saying Taiwan will not lower its guard because China has never abandoned the use of force against Taiwan.
  • Amid daily PLA activity, Taipei urged careful integrated assessments rather than quick judgments, cautioning no single leadership reshuffle suffices and pointing to recent war games and rising defence spending.
