Taiwan carries out first torpedo test fire for domestically made submarine
CSBC Corp said the test verified detection, tracking, fire control, launch and torpedo guidance as Taiwan pushes to deter China.
On Thursday, CSBC Corp announced that Taiwan's first domestically developed submarine, the Narwhal, successfully completed its maiden torpedo test on Wednesday, verifying detection, tracking, fire-control, launch, and guidance capabilities.
The indigenous submarine program aims to strengthen deterrence against the Chinese navy and protect vital sea lanes, marking a breakthrough for Taiwan as it modernizes its armed forces amid regional tensions.
Costing $1.57 billion, the Narwhal features a Lockheed Martin Corp combat system and carries US-made Mark 48 heavyweight torpedoes, joining two existing submarines purchased from the Netherlands in the 1980s.
Although originally slated for 2024 delivery, the project suffered delays before achieving a successful underwater sea trial in January, supported by expertise from the United States and Britain.
Taiwan hopes to deploy at least two domestically developed submarines by 2027, potentially equipping later models with missiles to bolster naval capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.
