Taiwan condemns 'dangerous' planned Chinese navy drill with Indonesia to its east
Taiwan’s top China policy agency said the drill would deepen gray-zone harassment and challenge maritime rights, as bilateral trade reached $11.27 billion in 2025.
- On Wednesday, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council condemned China's plan to hold a mid-August naval drill with Indonesia east of Taiwan, calling it a "military provocation" that infringes on Taiwan's sovereignty.
- Beijing's strategy aims to create a "false impression" of jurisdiction over these waters, part of what the MAC describes as "exercises in name, expansion in reality" to undermine regional peace and stability.
- More than 110 military and coast guard ships have been deployed along the First Island Chain, with China Coast Guard vessels recently found 280 km and 80 km east of Lanyu.
- Taiwan is currently conducting its 10-day Han Kuang exercise, with the Navy and Coast Guard pledging to "closely monitor" the situation and take "necessary and appropriate measures" to safeguard territory.
- Bilateral trade between Taiwan and Indonesia totaled US$11.27 billion in 2025, with more than 335,000 Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan, placing Indonesia in a delicate diplomatic position amid Beijing's assertion of regional control.
