Tagovailoa's First Start with Falcons Comes at Pittsburgh, Where He Made Final Start with Dolphins
Tagovailoa will start against Pittsburgh after being benched and released by Miami last season, with Cooper Rush as backup and Michael Penix Jr. inactive.
Atlanta Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski named Tua Tagovailoa the starting quarterback on Monday for Sunday's season opener at Pittsburgh, where he made his final start for the Miami Dolphins last season.
Michael Penix, recovering from a 2025 ACL injury suffered in his left knee, will be inactive for Week 1, with Cooper Rush serving as Tagovailoa's backup while Stefanski focuses on the immediate matchup.
Tagovailoa completed 76.9 percent of his passes for 117 yards during the preseason but struggled with ball security, committing two fumbles in exhibition games.
"I don't have anything to prove to anyone on the outside," Tagovailoa said Wednesday, describing the starting opportunity as a "blessing" he does not take for granted after his benching by the Dolphins.
Stefanski intends to tailor the game plan against the Steelers' defense to highlight Tagovailoa's specific strengths, emphasizing that he focuses on what his players do best.
