Syrian Airlines resumes Russia flights after 1.5-year halt
Syrian Airlines said the route will operate weekly as it rebuilds regional and international service and expands travel options for Syrian citizens.
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, a Syrian Airlines flight from Moscow arrived at Damascus International Airport, marking the first civilian flight between the capitals in more than 1.5 years and the resumption of scheduled service.
Omar Al Hosari, President of Syria's General Authority of Civil Aviation, said the resumption reflects efforts to "reconnect Syria with the world" and rebuild the carrier's regional and international presence.
Direct Damascus-Amsterdam service returned on July 2, 2026, followed by weekly flights to Madinah on August 11, 2026, as the airline continues to restore European connectivity.
Under a new agreement with Russia, Syria will regain control of the Hmeimem air base and a commercial berth at Tartus, which Syria's Foreign Ministry said will function as "joint training" centers.
Israel remains one of the only countries not to conduct outreach to the new government, despite the new leadership continuing to seek positive ties with most nations.
