Syria Arrests 11 in Alleged Hezbollah Assassination Plot
Authorities said 11 suspects were arrested and weapons were seized as investigators alleged the group was preparing assassinations of senior officials.
On Tuesday, the Syrian Interior Ministry announced it dismantled a cell linked to Lebanese Hezbollah across five provinces. Authorities arrested 11 militants who allegedly infiltrated Syria after receiving specialized training and planned to conduct targeted assassinations of senior government officials.
Hezbollah previously supported the regime of ousted president Bashar Assad for a decade, operating within the so-called "Axis of Resistance" alliance led by Iran. Since Assad's ouster in December 2024, Syria's new authorities have repeatedly reported foiling plots blamed on the Iran-backed group.
The ministry displayed seized weapons, including RPG launchers and automatic rifles, alongside surveillance equipment confirming advanced preparation. Security forces also detained a figure responsible for "overseeing assassination operations," indicating the cell's operational leadership structure.
Hezbollah issued a statement "categorically denying the false accusations from the Syrian interior ministry," claiming the allegations aim to inflame discord between Syrian and Lebanese peoples. The group reiterated it has no presence on Syrian territory.
Syrian authorities have disrupted multiple alleged plots this year, including a sabotage attempt in Quneitra Governorate in April targeting rocket-launching equipment. Research by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and Long War Journal identified affiliations of several detainees.
