Synthetic kratom found at another suspected overdose in Oxford
Emergency crews revived a 22-year-old after police found synthetic kratom products at the scene, and officers warned of unpredictable drug risks.
On Thursday morning, the Oxford Police Department found a 22-year-old unresponsive at a home on Sweetgum Drive around 5 a.m.; emergency officials resuscitated the individual, who is expected to recover and is not an Ole Miss student.
Earlier this week, Lafayette County Metro Narcotics called on Mississippi lawmakers to ban synthetic kratom, requesting immediate legislative hearings and examination of state controlled substance laws.
Synthetic kratom products were found at the scene; investigators do not believe the items were purchased in the Oxford area.
Police stated this incident is not connected to recent death investigations involving Ole Miss students Aidan Hamilton and Robert Strang, who detectives previously linked to "Smax."
Warning the public about potential dangers, the Oxford Police Department and Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit noted that synthetic products can contain unpredictable substances, with investigations remaining ongoing.
