Italy’s New Far-Right Party Becomes Fourth Most Popular in Polls

- On Tuesday, a survey showed far-right movement Futuro Nazionale, led by former army general Roberto Vannacci, has overtaken Forza Italia to become Italy's fourth most popular political force, with 7.5% support compared to 7.1%.
- Futuro Nazionale was founded in February after Vannacci broke away from Matteo Salvini's League party; Vannacci's popularity has since outstripped the League, which sits at 5.7% in the latest survey.
- Vannacci gained prominence after writing the best-selling book 'The World Upside Down', which prompted the Defence Ministry to suspend him from duty for 11 months in February 2024; supporters cite his Army special forces career as evidence of merit.
- Adding Vannacci's movement would lift the right above 47 per cent in some surveys, making Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's coalition dependent on his support to secure a majority, while excluding him leaves the incumbent short.
- Despite the coalition's need for support, Vannacci claims he represents the "real right" and has so far ruled out joining Meloni's alliance, while she pushes electoral reforms through the Senate this month to ensure stable governments.
